”It’s all set, isn’t it? We are meeting tomorrow,” I said into the phone.
”Yes. I am looking forward to it,” Harry replied and even though I could not see it but I could feel the smile that jingled on his face.
”So, should I consider myself lucky?” I asked him while smirking.
”You are spe— Umm… consider yourself very lucky,” he shot, while the fluff voice of his laughter filled my ears. He could have said ‘special’ but he just didn’t want to. I wondered why was it that way?
”We have so much to catch up. I am sure you have some great stories to share,” I said blankly. I did not want to tell him about ‘that’ but it seemed like I had no other choice.
Finally the sun shone brightly signalling the start of a new day. I was just too excited to meet Harry, after all, we were meeting after six months and ‘A LOT’ had happened in those six months. Just as I locked the door to my house, I heard a car honking three times in a row. Even with my back to the car, I knew exactly who it was.
After checking the door knob twice, I finally turned to see Harry looking as cute as ever.
”You won’t ever cut your honking thing down, right?” I asked him while sliding in the passenger seat beside Harry.
”Never in my wildest dream. I love teasing you,” he said while putting his index finger on my nose and jingling it before ruffling my hair like I was a kid. Gosh! He always does that and I hate it.
”My hair,” I shouted at him while making no attempt to put my hair back in place.
”Ha.Ha. As if you care,” He fake-laughed. Well, he was right. I was never the one to care about my hair or which make-up I wore. I did those things as simple as possible.
We sat across each other in the expensive-looking boat house which had a nice view of the deep river which was shimmering due to the rays of the sun.
”Wow, this is great,” I was too thrilled to say something more.
”C’mon. It had to be. I know you love boats and the water,” He said as it was too obvious. But it wasn’t. It just wasn’t. I mean, I never mentioned to him that I loved boats. Or maybe I had.
We talked for what seemed like ages and kept on talking. It was like, we never ran out of topics. But even earlier, we never did. He was my best friend since 9 years and there wasn’t a solitary time when we felt out of words. It was only natural to me.
”I saw that video diary,” I told him while our explendid lunch arrived.
”You did?” He seemed pretty shocked.
”Hey, don’t tell anybody, but I am a secret directioner,” I whispered to him.
We bothe burst into fits of laughter. Oh, I will miss day, I thought.
”I knew you would answer in that stupid way. I mean, who doesn’t like girls with pretty face or two eyes?” I reached him and smacked him on his head. We were going to start eating until his phone buzzed.
”Yeah, Zayn, but I just can’t tell her,” Harry whispered quietly into the phone so that I couldn’t hear it.
”I heard that. Anyway, tell Zayn that I love him and the other boys too,” I said while making my way towards the glass full of water.
Everyting was fine until I started drinking water. I always drank water before and after my meal. That’s when the diamond studded ring danced and glimmered into the bright sunlight causing Harry to shield his face with one of his free hand.
”What’s that?” He asked after I quickly retreated my hand under the table. He had already switched off his phone.
”Nothing, trust me,” I stammered.
”I know when you are lying Kate. So just cut it out and show it to me,” He partly ordered and partly requested.
”Umm… Harry, I am en…enga…engaged,” I finally said while pulling my left hand over the table releazing the glittery dance of the ring.
”What the hell do you mean by ‘you are ENGAGED?”’ He shouted. I knew this voice. He was really pissed-off and I knew exactly that I shouldn’t have told him.
”Sit down and don’t make a scene, please,” I requested him. He grabbed my arm and pulled me towards a corner, although the boat was ours, people could still hear us. So, he pulled me to a more private corner. Although, he was angry but he grabbed my arm gently trying not to hurt me. He placed me in front of him with my back touching the wall and blocked my way with his which lay above my head on the wall.
He was glaring so hard into my eyes that it was impossible for me to looke away, instead, I kept on gazing into his eyes. I could actually see a faint glow of my face in his orbs.
”We meet after 6 months 13 days 5 hours 19 seconds and you are telling me that you got engaged meanwhile? Then you ask me not to make a scene out of this? How can you expect me to do that Kate?” He said or moreover shouted at me.
I was too dumbstuck that he knew the whole time when we were seperate. I couldn’t open my mouth, let alone speak a word.
When he realized that I was not responding, he quickly took out his phone and dialled a number. I knew whose number he was trying. He was always so predicatble.
”Hello, Jill, why did you allow your daughter to get engaged?” He asked into the phone. After hearing her reply, he clicked the phone off. Tears came gushing down his eyes. He made not attempt to hide his tears because he had cried often times in front of me, ranging from a break-up till the time when a close family relative died. He turned around and without even speaking a word anymore, he rushed out.
I ran behind him, trying to catch his speed, but he was walking too fast, or rather running too fast. I came outside and saw him on the phone again. ”Dude, but she is engaged.” ”What do I do?” ”I know, I should have told her, but I just can’t.”
”What is the thing that you haven’t told me yet?” I asked him while bending down to sit beside him on the floor. He clicked off his phone.
”It’s none of your business.”
”Then whose business is it?”
”I don’t know. Go and ask the girl who left her 9-year long best friend and got engaged without even telling him.”
”Yes, I did. But I fail to understand that why are you so irritated about all this?
”Because I love you, Goddammit. I really do.” He shouted while standing up.
”And I do too.” I said while standing up.
He flung me in his arms and swirled me around as his lips crashed mine. Sparks flew everywhere. I am not even kidding, sparks did flow around me.
”You don’t know how happy I am to hear this. But why did you get engaged?” He said with disappointment.
”Did you really forget about it all? You remembered the time of our seperation but not our best-friend anniversary?” I asked him.
”Shit! I am so sorry.”
”I forgive you because you finally admitted it. I can’t believe that it took you 9 years to finally tell me what I always wanted to hear. This prank was for that,” I said winking at him.
”Girl, you have just 5 minutes to run until I catch you.” He said before I started running over. He finally caught me and we broke into yet another lazy kiss.
